Albert Bierstadt (1830 - 1902)
Albert was a German artist who moved to the United States with his family in 1831. He began to paint in oils in 1851, began painting in New England and New York in the 1850s, and was even drafted during the American Civil War. Before the war, Bierstadt traveled out to Western America in the company of Frederick W. Lander and made sketches that would ultimately become this finished paintings. He traveled back to the West in 1863, and would do so for the rest of his career.
This man’s work is just so unbelievable and amazingly beautiful. It looks so heavenly and actually somewhat comforting and calm (at least for me). I’m not kidding when I say I could cry because this work is so beautiful. You could tell that this was a man who loved nature and truly respected it.
